Welcome to Clarus Educational Centre

Clarus Educational Centre is a BC-curriculum-based math, science and language centre that provides academic tutoring and workshops to secondary students throughout Metro Vancouver.

Since 2001, we have connected secondary students with college and university undergraduates, graduates, teaching assistants as well as teachers-on-call and certified professional teachers.

Today, Clarus has grown into a network of tutors and administrators offering personal tutoring in math, calculus, biology, chemistry, physics, science, English and French through classroom facilities in Port Moody and Port Coquitlam.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does personal tutoring cost?

What subject areas can you tutor?

What hours are available?

We focus on math, calculus, biology, chemistry, physics, science (general), English and French. We follow the learning outcomes as they are designed for the British Columbia curriculum for grades 9 through 12.
Our tutors' availability will vary between each other but typically we strive provide tutoring starting at 2:30pm until 9:30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. We are closed on all BC statutory holidays and district wide professional development days.
We believe in simple, straight-forward pricing.

We charge $30 per hour (plus GST)  and book in one hour intervals.

No assessment fees, admin fees or any other hidden fees. Simple. Straight-forward.

What is your cancellation policy?

Is tutoring right for us?

Why can't I book anything for today?

Our tutors often come into Port Moody and Port Coquitlam from their colleges and universities. Typically they aren't there if they do not have an appointment booked in advance. To book an appointment with less than 24 hours notice, give us a call and we'll see if we can work up some magic.
Just like you, our tutors lead busy lives - many are students by day and super heros at night. They arrange their week in advance and travel directly from their college or university to fulfill our commitment to you. So for any changes or cancellations to an appointment we ask that you give us 24 hours notice.
Like a 1990's Bryan Adam song..."look into your heart and you will see." If it doesn't come to you then turn around and ask each other if you both want it. If the parent and student aren't on the same page then it becomes tougher to stomach than dad's burnt burgers from last week's BBQ.

How will I know it is working?

What can we do to get the most out of tutoring?

Can I try it out without committing?

You can expect to see gradual improvements in their a student's overall grades and comprehension.

One day we know that you won't need tutoring. We'll be sad to see you go but super happy that we taught you how to fish.
You don't want to put a ring on it!? That's okay cause we're not the marrying type either.

If you are interested in trying out a session to see if our tutoring is a good fit, simply click on the BOOK NOW button and register for an appointment today. No commitment. No rings.
So happy that you asked! Stay on top of homework and assignments and come ready to talk about questions and areas that you stuggled with. We want to make sure that you get the most out of your sessions so we will prioritize and focus on the most important concepts first.

Can you make my kid an "A" student by the end of the year?

How much tutoring do I need?

Why isn't there a tutor available for my subject and grade?

We'd love spend forever with you but you can't have too much of a good thing!  Really, ask yourself,  what is your goal for the year?

One hour a week will typically benefit students who just started struggling this semester and are looking to return to their previous level of achievement. If you are high achieving and looking to slightly improve, then one hour should do.

Two hours a week are recommended for those who have been struggling for more than one semester or a full calendar year. Making a jump in letter grades typically requires two hours a week of personal tutoring.

Three or more hours a week are  beneficial if you are in an alternate education arrangement or non-semestered school schedule. If you are getting ready to write an important exam (e.g. SATs, university entrance exams, etc.) then this is the way to go.

If your currently failing the course, then I am going to go out on a limb here and say no.

The issues that we typically see when students struggle is that it results from weeks, months or years worth of misunderstanding core concepts. We like magic but we're not professional magicians. Improvements to grades typically occur gradually over time.
Often our tutors fill up quickly through students registered for weekly guaranteed sessions. Any time that they have remaining is booked on a first-come, first serve basis.

We work hard to recruit and retain the best and brightest tutors. If they can't meet  our standards then we don't put them in front of you.

Our philosophy is that we would rather wait and recruit a rockstar tutor than set you up with someone who just meets the minimum standard.
